    Description

Encased 1912-D Lincoln Cent, advertising the First State Bank of Gresham, Oregon.  The encasement die used for the Reverse of this matches one used for souvenir pieces made for the 1905 Lewis & Clark Exposition, if I am not mistaken.  The "1912 Fair" referred to could be either the State Fair held in Salem, or more likely the Multnomah County Fair. This institution was not a chartered National Bank and I was not able to locate any information on it, nor do I recollect ever hearing the name despite being located less than 80 miles from where it would have been in business.  Presumably it failed by the early part of the Depression. The first such encasement I or anyone else I talked to had ever seen, so presumably quite scarce even here in Oregon.  Interesting as well in that they used a Denver Mint Cent rather than one from San Francisco, which was distributing directly to the Portland area by ship and rail at this time.  Cent enclosed is Extremely Fine although slightly warped as normal for being jammed into an encasement, with signs of an old cleaning.  The color is a normal chocolate Brown - for some reason I had problems with color balance when imaging this; it is definitely NOT as "orange" as it appears here.  Otherwise, outer aluminum ring is Extremely Fine or better, with just typical mild scuffing and marks.
